"Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden inside you?"
"The hunt to uncover those jewels - that's creative living."
I just finished reading the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. I wanted to take the time to give my review of the book in hopes you will find it useful if you are thinking about reading it.
According to Liz fear is the biggest reason we don't uncover our hidden jewels. I can totally relate to that concept. As most of us know, the list of fears that holds us back is almost endless. Liz assures us that we need our fear "for obvious reasons of basic survival." But we don't need our fears for creative expression.
Her beliefs on how ideas work are, according to her, based on magically thinking. Personally I think she might be on to something. For example, did you ever have a great idea that you didn't act on immediately? And then shortly thereafter you hear about someone that took that idea and developed it into what it was meant to be? We probably all have. Which is why I think she could be right. Ideas have a will to be and they will go with whomever they find that brings them into being.
Big Magic celebrates living a creative life. Whatever that thing might be that brings us out of ourselves. That thing that opens up to experience wonder and amazement. For me that thing is photography. I also take creative flight in crocheting. One of my goals for 2016 is to live more creatively and do something, anything creative every single day. My version of busting out of the fear.
I thoroughly enjoyed Big Magic. Liz Gilbert has a way of writing that is light and easy, almost as if she was engaging you in a conversation. For me this book will be a resource to "living a life that is driven more strongly by curiosity than fear."
