May 1st, also known as May Day, has many meanings attached to it. May Day has ancient roots attached to the spring festivals of rebirth. In many European countries it has a more modern meaning as it is recognized as the International Workers Day.
In my mind I associate May Day with May baskets. A day when flowers would be put into baskets and hung on the doors of friend, neighbors and loved ones. You would hang the basket, knock on the door, and then leave. My oldest daughter participated in this tradition as a child.
Have you ever celebrated May Day with May baskets? I fear that this might be another tradition that has faded away into history.
But for this May Day I leave you with a May Day basket as we did them when I was a girl.
