how to create a seaside decor

The beautiful blues and green of the Pacific Ocean captured in a photograph from Maui
The beautiful blues and green of the Pacific Ocean captured in a photograph from Maui.

You've purchased your seascape photograph.  It's framed and hanging in your living room. But something is lacking.  Your room doesn't have that beach side atmosphere you were hoping to capture.  Here are a couple of tips to help you give your room that seaside feeling.

Pull in colors that are beach related and the colors in your photograph.  Use those as your accents if you aren't planning to replace your furniture.  The featured photograph gives you a wide selection to use for accent colors.  You can also use candles, especially ones that are decorated with seashells. to create a tabletop accent.

Texture is another thing you can use.  Consider framing your photo in a wood that reminds you of driftwood.  Use accents pillows that are trimmed in a braid that looks like nautical rope.  Any little treasures you might have collected on your beach vacation can be added to create a layer of texture and to create your seascape decor.

A photograph of a lone kayaker on the deep blue pacific ocean off Maui.
A lone kayaker on the deep blue pacific ocean off Maui.

I love large beautiful landscape and seascape photos.  They can make such a statement in the decor of a home or office setting.

But what is it about a landscape or seascape image that make it work for you?  The photos that you will enjoy most are the ones that you can picture yourself in.  If you can do that, then you have found the perfect photo for your home.

This beautiful photograph is of a lone kayaker on the ocean.  Are you a kayaker?  Do you want to learn how to kayak?  If so, then this might be the image for your wall, because you can imagine yourself as that kayaker.

But what if you love the image but don't want to see the kayaker?  Then this is your lucky day because this image is also available without the kayak.  Check it out here and start imagining yourself on the beach staring out at the deep blue sea.

Photograph of the island of Lanai as seen from Maui.
The island of Lanai as seen from Maui.

Imagine what it must be like to wake up every morning and have a view like this.  Changing with the tides, the light and occasional rain cloud.

Imagine views so vivid and so varied that they are indescribable. The blues form their own special rainbow, only it is in the water.  And a light that can only be described as amazing.

That is the view that a few people see every day.  A view that I was privileged to have for a week.  Because I had my camera with me you are able to bring this view into your home or office to be enjoyed every day of the week.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Looking out to sea

Photograph of standing on the island of Maui and looking out to sea.
Standing on the island of Maui and looking out to sea.

There is something about the ocean.  The sound of waves crashing against a rocky shore or the endless view that is calming.  There is so much power in the sound of the waves and yet it relaxes me.  Going to sleep to the sound of waves is like someone singing me a lullaby.

I know not everyone agrees with my feelings on the sound of waves. But I think we can all agree that pictures of an ocean are mesmerizing.

The featured image this week was taken from the northwest side of Maui, in the Hawaiian Islands.  Off to the right is the island of Molaka'i.  I love the light and dark of the rain cloud as it passes overhead.  With its shades of blue and gray this is a photograph that could be hung in almost any color scheme.  Wouldn't it be nice to relax at the end of a hard day with this photo?

Photograph of beach volley ball.
Volley ball at the beach. But what are they doing here?

Last week I went to the coast to participate in the annual KelbyOne Photo Walk.  I hadn't been to this little town and beach so it was all new for me.

Just before leaving I saw this group playing volley ball. It seemed like an iconic Southern California beach shot so I just had to make the image.  When I got home and saw what I had,  well I just had to laugh.  They were hitting the ball when I raised my camera.

This image isn't currently in my gallery because it was taken just for fun.  But if you are interested in purchasing it contact me and we will work it out.

How important is blue to your home and life?

Blue is often associated with calmness and a relaxing atmosphere. Blues and purples have short wave lengths that can relax and calm us.  So we have the science associated with this calming effect.

From a psychological aspect there are several associations to blue.  We associate blue with reliability and the flow of communication.  Without some blue in our lives to help with the flow of information or communication and energy we will end up feeling a level of frustration and lack of progress in our activities.

As with other colors, there are several shades of blue we can consider.  In  Feng Shui blue with undertones of green can inspire confidence.  They represent new beginnings.  Deeper blues bring wisdom.  I was surprised to learn that indigo, a dark blue, is a secondary color of mourning in the Chinese culture.  A good thing to know if your work with colors includes working with a wide range of cultures.

Blue also represents the Water element in Feng Shui.  So if blue isn't your color you can still have the influence of the water element with the inclusion of artwork that shows water, such as the image above.  Even the way water is represented in the artwork is to be considered.  Is it going to be in a place with a lot of energy?  Then crashing waves might be a good choice.  But if the room is one where you want calmness then the photo above is a good choice.  You might even consider including a few seashells in your decor to bring out the water element. Maybe a few scattered around or a collection in a clear vase would work for you.

Another fun way to include the water element and ultimately the color blue would be to include a small water fountain in your home or office. Not only are they pleasant to hear, but they can also add much needed humidity to dry winter air.

Take a moment to look around your home.  How have you included the color blue or the water element?  If you haven't do you think you will try to bring it into your home?

Can i hang Photos in the bathroom?

A calm seascape featuring the Atlantic ocean.

With all the hot steaminess that we create in the bathroom this is a valid consideration.

Photos framed behind glass have always worked in my bathroom.  One of my daughters could drain the hot water tank with one shower, so you can imagine the steam.  So yes, it can be done.

With the variety of options for print medium today why risk damaging something that you truly love and paid hard earned money to acquire?  Why not go with a print on metal?  They are waterproof and will be able to withstand all that hot steam and moisture of the bathroom.

Photos printed on metal have a unique and beautiful look.  Be sure and look at the metal print option when shopping for your bathroom decor.  The above Atlantic coastline scene is available on metal as are all of my photographs.
